Mid-air suicide threat

A passenger on a Silchar-Calcutta Jet Airways flight on Friday afternoon threatened to commit suicide by jumping out of the plane while it was cruising at an altitude of 10,000ft. An airline official said the man was to catch a flight to Chennai from Calcutta. He was handed over to police when the flight landed in the city at 3.30pm. Road death: A man in his mid-60s collapsed in front of AMRI Hospital, Salt Lake, on Friday evening and was declared dead after being taken inside. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Police are trying to ascertain his identity.

Murder arrest: Deb Kumar Chakraborty, 23, has been arrested in connection with the murder of Sandip Chandra, 48, whose body was found in his Chitpur home on November 22. Chakraborty knew Chandra, who had recently opened a BPO, through a common friend. Police recovered some of the items that had been looted from Chandra’s home from Chakraborty’s Dhakuria residence.

Power supply: Power supply may be affected in the James Long Sarani, Sakher Bazar, Biren Roy Road, Mangalam Park, Kailash Ghosh Road, Motilal Gupta Road, Putiary and Sarsuna areas, and parts of Behala between 11am and 2pm on Saturday. Fire: A fire broke out on the ground floor of a two-storeyed building on Baithakkhana Road on Friday morning. Five tenders brought the fire under control within an hour.

Mill blaze: A fire broke out at Empire Jute Mill in Titagarh on Friday night. Fifteen engines were fighting the blaze.

Run over: A truck ran over Sheikh Akhtar Hussain, a 32-year-old resident of Dent Mission Road, at Hastings on Friday morning. He was declared dead at SSKM Hospital. The vehicle was impounded.
