Calcutta South ticket for Bakshi
- didi remains trinamul chief

Calcutta, Nov. 2: Trinamul state president Subrata Bakshi will contest the Calcutta South Lok Sabha seat, Mamata Banerjee said today.

“I have an important announcement to make. Subrata Bakshi will be our candidate for the Calcutta South bypoll, if he agrees,” the Trinamul chief said at a party meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

The seat fell vacant after Mamata resigned as Calcutta South MP on October 8, days after winning the Bhowanipore bypoll.

Bakshi, the transport and PWD minister, had stepped down as Bhowanipore MLA to clear the decks for Mamata to get elected to the Assembly. Mamata said she had not forgotten his “sacrifice”.

Bakshi said: “I have always done what the party has asked me to do.” Trinamul sources said Mamata wanted Bakshi to concentrate more on the party organisation.

Mamata today said the Election Commission “did not consult the government” before declaring the date of the bypolls. “This is a technical and legal aspect,” she said. Chief secretary Samar Ghosh said he had written to the commission to “reconsider the date”.
