Twelve arrested

Nagaon, Oct. 27: Haflong police today arrested 12 people allegedly involved in torching houses in the district since Wednesday. According to a Haflong police source, six of the accused reportedly sheltered NSCN (I-M) cadres in the district over the past couple of months.

Crude bomb

Nagaon: Tracks near Mahur railway station in Dima Hasao district suffered minor damage in a crude bomb blast around 1am . The Hills Tiger Force was suspected to be behind the incident. Haflong police said the blast impact was low and it did not hamper train services.

NGO effort

Jorhat: Prakriti ó Save Nature, a local NGO involved in environment conservation, on Thursday collected banana trees used during the Diwali celebrations from the town to be used for producing organic fertilisers.


Jorhat: A temporary steel bridge over the Bhogdoi river will be formally opened at the Puja Dubi ghat on Friday for devotees of Chhath, starting November 1.


Jorhat: Assam forest minister Rockybul Hussain will formally open Kaziranga National Park to tourists on Friday.


Dhubri: Mancachar police circle office head constable Feroz Ahmed was suspended on Thursday by Dhubri superintendent of police Pradip Chandra Saloi for the formerís alleged involvement in a cashew nut and black pepper theft racket.


Dhubri: The body of a girl, recovered from the Kathaldi village under Bilasipara police station of Dhubri district on October 25 night, was identified as that of Indrani Bora. The 22-year-old girl was a student of an MBBS coaching centre in Guwahati.


Dhubri: Dipika Roy, 35, of Kheraj Daobhangi village in Dhubri district, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree at her residence on Thursday morning. Her body was brought to Dhubri civil hospital for post-mortem.


Tezpur: Preeti Kumari, 3, who was kidnapped on Wednesday from Jahajghat in Tezpur, was rescued from Juria in Nagaon district on Thursday. The abductor, Basanta Kumar, was arrested.

Kohima: Former Nagaland PCC president and veteran Congress lawmaker K.V. Pusa celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, at his Old Ministers Hill residence with the Nishpaya Jana Seba Nepali Samiti on Wednesday evening.
