Guwahati, Oct. 25: Kaushik Phukan of Dibrugarh and Sanjana Sarma of Sivasagar claimed the men and women’s crowns respectively in the RG Baruah All-Assam major ranking table tennis tournament that concluded at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here today.
Phukan overcame a stiff challenge from local lad Chinmoy Sarma to register a 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9 win in the final while Sarma overcame Duliajan girl Mallika Gogoi 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 11-1 for the women’s title.
Earlier in the day, Salim Javed and Deepika Upadhyaya of Guwahati annexed the junior boys’ and girls’ titles respectively.
While Javed got the better of Golaghat opponent Sankab Gautam Baruah 11-9, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10 in the boys’ singles final, Upadhyaya defeated Himakhee Gogoi of Duliajan 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 in the girls’ final today.
Sankab G. Baruah, however, lifted the sub-junior boys’ title beating Hrishikesh Bora of Nagaon 11-8, 11-6, 11-2 in the final. Ajupi Phukan of Duliajan won the sub-junior girls’ crown overcoming Akanksha Bhuyan of Dibrugarh 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7.
In the cadet events, Mrinmoy Gondhiya of Guwahati and Adrija Sarma of Guwahati won the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively.
Gondhiya prevailed over Prayash Pratim Bharadwaj of Jorhat 11-6, 11-0, 11-8 while Sarma defeated Mousaki Deka of Guwahati 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8 in the final. There was no major upset in the preliminary rounds of the 59th Stag Sitaram Agarwala inter-district and state table tennis championship that got under way at the same venue today.
