Power crisis ‘created’ by govt, says KMSS

Guwahati, Oct. 22: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today accused Dispur of creating an artificial scarcity of power to garner people’s support for big dams.

KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi told reporters here that the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) had been resorting to continuous power cuts in several parts of the state and even the capital city had not been spared from severe loadshedding.

He alleged that it was a conspiracy hatched by power minister Pradyut Bordoloi with chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s support to convince the people about the necessity of constructing big dams to overcome the power shortage.

“There were several opportunities for Assam to become self-sufficient in power generation. The Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station, which used to produce 120MW of power, was closed down by the ASEB and sold to the National Thermal Power Corporation at a very low price,” Gogoi said, adding that several other power generation units were shut down in the state for the same reason to facilitate construction of big dams by the corporate lobby.

He also demanded the resignation of the power minister for allegedly keeping the state’s people in the dark to facilitate construction of big dams.
