Subrata is upbeat

Calcutta: Mohun Bagan’s newly-appointed technical director Subrata Bhattacharya, on Wednesday, promised that there would no half measures during his stay at the helm.

Wednesday was the first day for Bhattacharya and coach Prasanta Banerjee and straightway they got into the business at the club ground. After a brief introduction, the players had a strenuous practice session. Bhattacharya also had intense discussions with captain Jose Ramirez Barreto, Sunil Chetri and other senior players.

Subrata was candid in his assessment. “The side has a few injury problems. The defence is lacking in confidence and the morale is low. We will try to rectify the wrongs but will take a cautious approach and not hurry with things. But one thing for sure… We will not panic. And I am confident things will get better soon,” he said.

Barreto also felt things would change for the better. “Steve Darby’s philosophy did not gel with our style of football. Subrata is a confident man. My first success in Indian football was under him. I am happy he is here with us,” said Barreto.

Barreto, for the record, is yet to regain full fitness and is doubtful for the first two matches of the I-League.

The technical director said it was different feeling coming back to Bagan after three years. “Things have changed. The atmosphere and the ambience is very different now,” he said.
