3 held for extortion
Jorhat, Oct. 11:
Two surrendered Ulfa militants, Pranab Saikia and Dipak Rajkhowa, were apprehended from a medical shop at Dergaon in Golaghat district on Tuesday when the duo had allegedly come to extort money from the shopowner in the name of Ulfa. Later, another person, Biju Bora, was arrested for his involvement in the incident.
Minister visit
Jorhat:
Assam minister of state for border areas development Siddique Ahmed and home secretary G.D. Tripathi on Tuesday visited Merapani along the Assam-Nagaland border and took stock of the situation.
Police action
Jorhat:
Superintendent of police, Jorhat, has sent S.A. Karim, in-charge of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital police outpost to police reserve barracks on Tuesday following complaints of demand for money from autorickshawpullers of the area.
Drug seized
Silchar:
The BSF has seized nearly 13,000 bottles of cough syrup Phensedyl which is also used as a narcotics drug, valued at Rs 10 lakh during a raid at Basatapur village in south Assam. A smuggler has been arrested.
