Maid in diamond heist

Calcutta, Sept. 17: A 38-year-old woman who used to work as a domestic help at a jute baron’s Alipore apartment has been arrested for allegedly stealing diamond and gold ornaments and cash.

Police said Poornima Halder, whose services were terminated by Rajeev Kankaria a few months ago, had “struck a deal” with another domestic help at the house, Ramdev Verma, who used to steal ornaments and cash and send them to her Hooghly home. Poornima was picked up from her Mograhat home last night.

“Interrogating Ramdev, we came to know about the nexus between him and Poornima,” a police officer said.

He said the Kankarias, who own the 10-storey Kankaria Estate on Little Russel Street that houses several offices, had complained that six diamond-studded bangles and Rs 3 lakh in cash were missing.

“We believe that the ornaments and cash were stolen by Poornima and later by Ramdev in the past few months. We found the ornaments in her house,” the officer said. “Ramdev stole one ornament at a time. So the Kankarias did not initially get wind of the theft.”
