At least eight people had conspired to kill college owner Suptendu Dutta and two persons engaged by them carried out the job, investigators said on Tuesday.
Police have come to this conclusion after interrogating Asit Roy, the arrested accountant who worked part-time for Dutta. “Roy is our prime suspect as his statement does not tally with our findings,” said an officer at Belghoria police station.
Dutta, the owner of two management-cum-engineering colleges in Salt Lake and Siliguri, and his driver Sushanta were found dead in Dutta’s Indica on Belghoria Expressway on Friday night with bullet injuries in their heads.
Investigation revealed that Dutta had picked up Roy from his Dum Dum residence and visited a chartered accountant’s office in the BBD Bag area.
“We have found a lot of white sand on the car floor. The mats in front of the backseat were almost covered with sand,” said an officer.
“This type of sand is common at construction sites. According to Roy, they went straight to the chartered accountant’s office and he was dropped home around 8.40pm. If this was true, there should not have been sand inside the car. Dutta’s family members said Sushanta had cleaned the car in the morning before they left their Chinsurah home.”
Dutta had been granted a bank loan of Rs 2 crore and had applied for a second loan of the same amount to expand his business.
“Roy had taken Rs 1 lakh as commission for helping Dutta get the loan. The two had an altercation over the commission. We are trying to find out why Dutta still took Roy with him to the chartered accountant,” said the officer.
