Shahid Minar is set to get a fresh coat of paint and new lights.
The monument topped the government’s list of city landmarks in need of a facelift. The chief minister wanted to hold a cultural show on the Shahid Minar ground on Mahalaya (September 27).
According to the blueprint of change, a pathway with a low-height fencing will be built around the structure. The top of the monument will be coloured in keeping with the chief minister’s wishes.
“We can work out a Tricolour pattern for the top. The body will remain white though,” said a PWD engineer.
PWD secretary A.R. Bardhan said the ground level would be raised to prevent waterlogging.
The company looking after the monument’s illumination will be told to light it both from inside and outside, said Nirmal Sarkar, the chief engineer of the PWD. At present, there are no lights inside.
