Pandya wife seeks fresh probe

Ahmedabad, Aug. 31: Slain BJP leader Haren Pandya’s wife today demanded a fresh investigation, two days after Gujarat High Court acquitted all the 12 accused and dubbed the CBI’s probe “botched up”.

Jagruti sought the support of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and L.K. Advani in her quest for justice, saying the acquittals showed her “husband’s real killers are still roaming free”.

“Haren lived and died for the BJP. This is the reason for my hope that the party will take up my fight as their fight and ensure my husband gets justice,” Jagruti said.

A government spokesperson, Jaynarayan Vyas, ruled out a fresh probe saying it was for the “CBI to move the Supreme Court”.

But Jagruti was hopeful of a favourable response from the chief minister. “If I don’t get it, I will speak to him (Modi).”

Sources said senior officials in the chief minister’s office were in touch with Jagruti. One official spoke to her this morning, the sources said, after which she softened her stand and refrained from repeating allegations she has made since the murder on March 26, 2003 that the killing was carried out for political reasons.

Pandya, a former state home minister, had fallen out with Modi and had been the rallying point for dissidents against the chief minister.

The high court had censured the CBI while acquitting the accused dubbing the investigation “botched up and blinkered”.
