Girl run over on way to school
A 13-year-old girl died near Dankuni on Monday after she was run over by a bus on her way to school. Sangita Chowdhury, a Class VIII student at Shri Ramakrishna Shishu Tirtha, was riding pillion on her father’s scooter when a bus hit the two-wheeler from behind.
angita was flung off the scooter and came under the wheels of the bus. Residents blocked the road for nearly three hours after the accident, demanding a speed-breaker on the road. The driver of the bus has been arrested.
Sari shop gutted
A fire broke out in the storeroom of a sari shop, Debashree Boutique, at Hindustan Park around 1.40pm on Monday. The shop is on the mezzanine floor of a three-storeyed building. Three tenders took over an hour to control the blaze. No one was injured. Excessive heat generated by high-power lights in the storeroom led to the fire, suspect fire department officials.
nother fire broke out at an iron-coating factory in Howrah’s Bamangachhi around noon on Monday. Three tenders took nearly an hour to douse the blaze. Police said the fire had started from a spot where paint buckets had been stacked.
Found hanging
Promod Sharaf, a 56-year-old trader, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room in a fifth-floor apartment of Windsor Palace on Ironside Road on Monday. Around 12.45pm, after several knocks on the door went unanswered, Promod’s wife Jayashree, 50, opened the room with a duplicate key and found him hanging, said police. No suicide note was found.
Arrest
Police arrested Moloy Karmakar, the son of septuagenarian Krishna Karmakar, who had fallen to her death from the terrace of her first-floor apartment in Tiljala on Sunday while taking a stroll with her 28-year-old daughter-in-law, Mohua. The daughter-in-law had been arrested on Sunday after neighbours lodged a complaint alleging foul play. Moloy and Mohua have been charged with murder and remanded in 14 days’ jail custody.
Clash
Nearly 40 buses on route 230, plying between Kamarhati and the Alipore zoo, remained off the road on Monday following a clash among a section of bus operators over Puja bonus. Police intervened and pacified the agitating workers. Later, a meeting was held and it was decided that buses would ply normally from Tuesday.
