Calcutta: Argentinas assistant coach Julian Camino, during his short inspection trip to the city, had said that Messi and Co. want to play a memorable match against Venezuela on September 2, at the Salt Lake stadium.
About the Messis, only time will prove how memorable it will be. But the match will certainly be a memorable and special experience for four unprivileged children — Rajen Bhuia, Rohit Mullick, Krishna Mullick and Vishal Das.
The lucky four will have the privilege of leading the players onto the field.
Thanks to an initiative by a child rights organisation, Save the Children — who are the cause partner of the official licensee of the match Celebrity Management Group (CMG) — the children, along with 25 others, will have the opportunity to watch their heroes in action at an arms distance.
Each of these children is either a child labourer or has been rescued from hazardous child labour situations. We were feeling sorry that we were not able to do any charitable work (while conducting the match) when this opportunity came across… We readily grabbed the chance. This is not a charity, but a support to a great cause, said Bhaswar Goswami on behalf of the organisers.
Thomas Chandy, CEO, Save the Children, said: Messi was fortunate to overcome a growth hormone deficiency to become the legend that he is today, but for millions of children in India, surviving beyond the age of five is a big problem. Nearly two million children under the age of five die every year in India.
So, using the platform provided by the match, we would like to draw the attention of people that they too can, and must, contribute to making a change in the lives of children.
Meanwhile, CMG officials had a meeting with the police on Tuesday to ensure the security of the spectators during the much-awaited match. The Salt Lake Stadium has one lakh-odd capacity and the organisers are confident of a full house.
Security of the fans is really important for us. We suggested a few security measures to the police and they acceded to our request. We will also appoint private security agencies. They will have 500 security personnel in the stadium to assist the police, said Goswami.
