IPS shift

Calcutta, Aug. 20: Forty-two senior police officers, including 37 IPS officers, were today transferred. A home official said the officers were transferred because they had held their posts for three years or more.

Ex-minister

Calcutta: Nirupama Chatterjee, the social welfare minister in the Jyoti Basu cabinet between 1977 and 1982, died on Saturday. She was 84 and suffering from age-related problems.

Jindal plea

Calcutta: Sajjan Jindal, the vice-chairman of JSW Group, has sought an appointment with Mamata Banerjee, the request coming when industries minister Partha Chatterjee called him up on Saturday. The Jindals will set up a steel plant in Salboni.
