Guwahati, Aug. 9: Chaygaon police in Kamrup district last night arrested two sand suppliers for their alleged involvement in the murder of student leader Arup Kalita at Kukurmara.
A police officer at Chaygaon said the two, Monoj Das, 20, and Mojil Ali alias Moina, 29, were arrested after information revealed by two forest guards held on Saturday in connection with the case.
“We have received some vital clues pointing to the two arrested persons’ nexus with the forest department. The two guards, arrested earlier, also said Das and Ali used to frequent the Kukurmara forest beat office. Investigations have revealed that the two had dealings with the gang involved in the crime,” the officer said.
The two were produced in the court of Kamrup chief judicial magistrate and sent to judicial custody.
Kalita, a leader of the All Assam Non-Tribal Students’ Union, was missing since August 25 last year when he went to the forest depot at Kukurmara under West Kamrup forest division to provide information about timber smuggling. Timber smugglers, with the help of unscrupulous forest officials, allegedly murdered him.
Kalita’s family members have identified his remains from the clothes, two mobile phones and the driving licence recovered from the pond.
