Mamata Banerjee will lay the foundation stone of a film city at a Calcutta Municipal Corporation plot in Uttarpara on August 13, said Tollywood director Haranath Chakraborty who visited the site with mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Sunday.
Actor Dipankar De accompanied the duo.
“The chief minister has given us the go-ahead to build the film city in Uttarpara. She will lay the foundation stone in the presence of the entire Tollywood fraternity on August 13,” Chakraborty said.
A day before, Mumbai-based art director and director Nitish Roy will come down to Calcutta and prepare a layout and budget for the project, which is likely to be implemented through a public-private partnership.
After visiting the plot, mayor Chatterjee met the vice-chairman of Uttarpara-Kotrung Municipality, Pinaki Dhamali, to discuss the preparations for the Saturday programme.
The civic authorities will hand over the 400-bigha plot on the western bank of the Hooghly, 19 km from Calcutta, to the information and culture department at the programme.
Municipal commissioner Arnab Roy will visit the site on Tuesday to check out the preparations.
The city civic body had acquired the Uttarpara plot in 1871 to set up brick kilns. Bricks from Uttarpara were used to construct underground sewers and pave roads in Calcutta.
Puja trains: Eastern Railway will run 108 special trains to different destinations from September 19 to November 15 to tackle the rush of passengers during the Puja holidays. Booking in Puja-special trains from the city will begin from August 8.
