Panel for Teesta project

Siliguri, Aug. 5: Manas Bhuniya today formed an advisory committee to oversee the execution of the Teesta barrage project and entrusted its coordination to his cabinet colleague and north Bengal development affairs minister Gautam Deb.

“The advisory committee will from now on advise and monitor the progress of this apex irrigation project of north Bengal,” irrigation and waterways minister Bhuniya said. “It will meet once every fortnight to assess the progress of the project.”

To check corruption, it was also decided that e-tenders would be issued for irrigation projects of more than Rs 1.25 crore.

Jumbo dead

Alipurduar: The carcass of a female elephant, suspected to be a member of a herd that rampaged through a Dooars garden last night, was found on Friday. The dead elephant was spotted by workers of Rehabari Tea Estate in Section 18 of the garden around 6am. Forest officials suspect the elephant had tried to cross a drain and slipped. The rear portion of the carcass was hanging in the drain when the foresters arrived at Rehabari, 500 metres from the Reti forest where the herd had disappeared.
