Love story goes awry, woman shot at

Patna, Aug. 1: Three assailants shot at a middle-aged woman in the Nala Road area of Kadamkuan police station this morning.

Around 9am, the woman, identified as 35-year-old Sarita Devi, was hit in the leg while she was returning home from a temple.

She was rushed to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for treatment, where her condition was said to be stable till reports last came in.

Acting on Sarita’s statement, two persons, identified as Kishan and Arjun, were arrested.

The police said the family of the wife of the woman’s lover had tried to get her killed. “Both of them are relatives of the wife of Prabhat. The police are presently looking for Manoj, Prabhat brother-in-law, who according to Sarita, was among the attackers. Raids are on and the man will be arrested soon,” an officer with Kadamkuan police station said.

“In 2005, Sarita was married to one Prabhat Rabbani, a resident of Diwan Mohalla under Khajekala police station and the owner a furniture shop on Nala Road. It was an inter-caste marriage and the boy’s family could never accept the marriage. So she used to stay at her parents’ place in Nala Road area. Without seeking divorce for Sarita from Prabhat, her family got her married off to a Lucknow resident. The second marriage, however, didn’t last for long, as the husband came to know of her first marriage and divorced her,” the officer added. The officer added that she came back and again started to stay with her parents.

“Once in Patna again, the Sarita got in touch with Prabhat and renewed the relationship. But Prabhat’s family had also got him married off to another girl. The duo kept their relationship discreet. But problem started when the family of Prabhat’s present wife came to know about the relationship,” the officer said.

A few months back, Prabhat’s brother-in-law, along with some men, barged into Sarita’s residence and threatened her with dire consequences, if she did not break her relationship with Prabhat.

“With Sarita not buckling under pressure, a conspiracy to kill her was hatched. Three motorcycle-borne waited for her today as she went to the local Shiva temple. The motive was to kill her but the bullet hit her in the leg,” the officer said.
