Fire safety measures
All markets, malls, auditoriums, housing complexes and educational institutions in the city must have in place the “minimum fire prevention arrangements”, including fire alarms and emergency exits, mayor Sovan Chatterjee said on Wednesday. Government-aided schools will get financial help to install fire-safety measures, added the mayor. Besides, it will be mandatory for complexes with more than 15 flats to install closed-circuit television sets.
Lecturer arrested
Sudip Ghosh, 43, a senior lecturer at Bengal Engineering and Science University, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly torturing wife Nibedita. She had filed a police complaint. He was produced in the chief judicial magistrate’s court, Howrah, and remanded in judicial custody for 10 days.
Docs beaten up
Relatives of an accident victim went on the rampage and beat up doctors and policemen after he died at Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital in Salt Lake on Wednesday. Tata Indica had hit Harideb Karmakar, 42, a van-rickshaw puller, in Sector V on Wednesday morning. “Karmakar was flung off his van. The Indica driver fled,” said a cop. Residents damaged the car and took Karmakar to the hospital, where doctors allegedly did not attend to him immediately. After he died, his relatives attacked some doctors on duty, Group D staff and cops posted on the premises, and also damaged property. Two men were arrested.
MSc course
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math, has started an MSc course in applied chemistry from the current academic session. Students securing 50 per cent marks with honours or major in chemistry or industrial chemistry are eligible to apply for the course.
Boy missing
Liluah resident Saswata Das, 9, has been missing since Tuesday afternoon. The Class IV student at Sri Aurobindo Primary School had left his Bamungachi Road home for tuition classes. When he did not return in the evening, his mother went to the tutor’s home and learnt that he had not turned up.
Extra coaches
Additional coaches will be attached to the Howrah-Raxaul-Mithila, Sealdah-Varanasi, Howrah-Patna Jansatabdi, Howrah-Danapur, Howrah-Mokama, Sealdah-Muzzafarpur express trains to deal with rush of passengers heading to Baidyanath Dham (Deoghar) for Shravani Mela.
Man held
Sheikh Nasru, 28, was arrested from Beleghata Main Road early on Wednesday for carrying an unlicensed single-shot. He was booked under the Arms Act.
