Guwahati, July 25: Wildcard entrants Fatehdeep Singh of Punjab and Parikshit Somani of Assam joined the seeds in the boys’ under-16 singles second round with cakewalk victories in their first round matches in the OIL-AITA Super Series Tennis Championship. The tournament got under way at Chachal tennis complex here today.
While Singh blanked out Abhinash Kaushik of Assam 6-0, 6-0, Somani prevailed over another Assam boy, Anchit Talukdar, 6-2, 6-2. Qualifier Bijoy Kumar Mohanty, also from Assam, made short work of statemate Raunak Bora 6-1, 6-4. Amlan Jyoti Baruah, who overcame Maharashtra qualifier Aditya Gokhale 6-4, 7-6 (1), was the only other Assam boy to make it to the second round. Nagaland qualifier Icirabie Salie slammed Orissa boy Avilash Mishra 6-0, 6-1 to book a second round berth.
The seeded players had effortless second round entries today. However, the Assam girls had a bad day on the under-16 court. Barring Marisha Dutta, who got the better of another Assam girl, Protiksha Sharma 6-3, 6-1, six of the home girls bade adieu. The keenest contest was between Tamil Nadu girls Thanushree Vale and C.S. Praneetha, which ended 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 in the former’s favour.
