PWD officials suspended

Silchar, July 23: Two senior technical officials of the public works department (PWD) in Cachar districtís road projects were suspended along with a sectional officer in its accounts cell last night by the Assam government for the alleged malpractice while discharging their jobs.

The three suspended officials are Imran Hossain Choudhury, an executive engineer of the PWDís Silchar rural division, Arjun Mandal, a sub-divisional officer (SDO) and Moloy Sengupta, the sectional officer.

While Choudhury could not be contacted, Mandal said, ďI am totally innocent. It appears that I am a victim of an office conspiracy. No specific charges have been levied against me. When I come to know about the charges furnished by the state government, I will adequately answer them. I can only say that in my service life I have worked with a clean slate, only discharging my duties in accordance with the government rules and in an honest manner,Ē he said here today.

Cachar deputy commissioner H.K. Deb Mahanta said the copies of the suspension orders of the officials were forwarded to his office by Dispur last night.

The suspension orders were signed by the commissioner of the state PWD (roads), Mohan Chandra Boro.

According to the local PWD (roads division) sources, these three officials allegedly figured in a number of scams.

This included the construction of a rural road link between Hatticherra and Madhuramukh near Chalitakandi, under the districtís Uddarbond block.

Sources added that PWD minister Ajanta Neog was reportedly peeved with the departmentís rural road division in Cachar district while supervising some work under the Scheduled Caste Component Programme last month, during her one-day whirlwind tour of this infrastructurally deficient and backward district.
