Q I religiously follow your articles and read about the five elements you mentioned. Would you please explain what these elements are and how I can use them in my house to my advantage?

A: The five elements are fire, earth, metal, water and wood. According to feng shui principles, everything in this universe is categorised as one of these elements and has a cyclical productive, destructive and exhaustive nature.

Each of the eight directions is ruled and nourished by a symbolic element, which is believed to be the essence of the vital life force or energy from that direction.

The direction of north is associated with career and business luck and is ruled by the water element and nourished by the metal element.

So if you wish to activate career and business luck then you should be enhancing in the northern direction with water and metal elements.

Similarly the southern direction of any property is dominated by the fire element and is nourished by the wood element.

If this quadrant of the property is energised with wood and fire elements then this will help to bring you name, fame and recognition.

East, the direction of the rising sun, is excellent for enhancing health and family bonding.

To bring about this you should activate the eastern part of the house with wood and water elements.

The west is the direction of the setting sun, which in feng shui is predominantly known to bring about children’s luck and helps them to settle well in their lives.

Hence, the western part of the house should be decorated with metallic artefacts and nourished by the earth or soil elements. Southwest is ruled by big earth and is known to bring about stability in a couple’s relationship because of the great gravitational power of the earth element.

Therefore, this area should be stabilised with heavy earthen objects and some fire elements to bring the much-needed passion in their lives.

Small wood rules the southeastern part of the house, which is directly connected with wealth.
