Bhubaneswar, July 15: The trees that made Bhubaneswar a green city may have reduced in numbers, but waking up to the morning chirps of the winged wonders of nature continues for residents of the city.
To feel close to nature in the growing concrete jungle of the city, adopting birds as companions is gaining popularity.
Birds are nowadays considered to be the most fashionable pet with more and more people in the city preferring these colourful and chirpy creatures as their pals.
“Doesn’t it feel good to wake up in the morning to the chirps and tweets of colourful birds? When I decided to buy a pet, I knew that I do not want to go the conventional way. I wanted to have a pet, which not many people have. Birds are pretty and it’s a beauty to watch them fluff their wings and tweet,” said Pabitra Jena, owner of three canaries.
City markets are flooded with bird shops, Ashoka Market in Ashok Nagar being the den for all bird-sellers.
However, it is an art to choose the right bird. Bird-sellers can easily deceive a novice buyer about the bird’s age and its illness.
Therefore, it is always recommended to have a thorough knowledge about the kind of bird one wants to buy and its pros and cons.
When ordering for a bird from a foreign country, it is advisable to request the dealers for an authentication certificate. An array of birds and its various breeds are available in the market. Most popular are canaries, finches, lovebirds, cocktails, java and macaw. The starting range of these birds is from Rs 1,000 and can go as high as Rs 6 lakh.
Pelleted foods are the best bird food. Vegetables and fresh fruits are also good for their health. One may also feed the pet canned bird food available in the market, after consulting a veterinary.
“It is easy to understand whether the bird is ill or not. Whenever the birds are ill, they usually sit still with their eyes closed. You will also notice a change in colour of their droppings. On observing these symptoms, the bird should be immediately taken to a doctor,” said veterinarian Dr. Samal.
Birds are social and having them as a pet can be a wonderful experience.
“They reduce stress and prove to be great friends for the pet-keeper. Also, with the growing urban chaos, they can bring in a slice of nature to our lives,” added Dr Samal.
