Silchar, July 12: Two government employees were arrested and a huge cache of explosives seized from their houses in a joint raid by Hailakandi police and the armyís 33 field artillery division at Matijuri, 5km from the district headquarters of Hailakandi, yesterday.
The employees arrested were Nurul Huda Laskar, 48, and his younger brother, Nur Ahmed Laskar, 40. Nurul is an employee of the districtís public health engineering office while his brother is an assistant teacher in a middle school in Sudarshanpur near Hailakandi town.
Army sources today said the raid was conducted early morning yesterday on the basis of intelligence inputs.
Sources said 35 detonators, 35 gelignite sticks and a tiny pouch of explosive materials were recovered from under the bed in Nurulís house, while four detonators and four explosives were retrieved from Nurís house.
The sources said during the past few months, the army had busted a few clandestine depots of unlicensed explosives spread across the district.
A case has been registered at Hailakandi police station under Section 248 of the IPC against the arrested duo.
Though the police authorities today claimed that these explosives were mainly meant for fishing in rivers and lakes, the army is trying to find out if the arrested duo has any links with underground militant outfits like the United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA) and Ataur Bahini, now operating in the district.
