Kidney stolen

July 10: A Nadia labourer working in Calcutta was drugged and one of his kidneys was taken out allegedly at a nursing home off EM Bypass. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.

Mrityunjoy Haldar, 35, had come to Calcutta in February after being recommended for a job by neighbour Somnath Pal. From June, Haldar’s wife Meera could not contact him as his phone was switched off.

On Friday, Meera received a text message from an unknown number saying Haldar’s kidney had been removed and Pal knew all about it. Haldar’s cousin Ajoy said: “Our neighbours caught hold of Pal. He called up one Balaram Das in North 24-Parganas’ Sodepur.”

Late that night, Das arrived with Haldar. “There were surgery marks on his abdomen. He told us his kidney had been removed,” Ajoy said.

Police said papers found on Das revealed that Haldar’s kidney had been removed at a nursing home off EM Bypass. He had been admitted under the name of Raju Das. After the surgery, Haldar was taken to a house in Sodepur. Pal and Das have been arrested.
