Survival Strategies

I am 20. I love a Marwari girl. What should I do to impress her parents? They are way richer than us and have a very different lifestyle.

Name and address withheld

Marwari girl? Hmmm….well for starters, you could tell them how you’ve registered a patent on something that will become bigger than Google and Facebook. Or you could tell them you’re the next star of the BJP or VHP. If all else fails, tell them you’re related to Harsh Neotia. That should work. Look it is incorrect to believe that Marwaris only marry their daughters into rich homes. I know of a very sweet girl who’s married a very dear friend of mine and all that friend does is play poker, hang with beauties at his Delhi farmhouse and lord over a tea plantation. I mean his wife could have even gotten Bill Gates but she is stuck with him. So there is hope for you son.

I’m a 28-year-old woman. My husband and I live in a rented flat. My husband has his own place back in his ancestral town which he wanted to sell and buy his sister a flat. I opposed as we aren’t that well off. However, his family is trying to pressurise him into spending all our money on them. Please help me.

Name and address withheld

Your husband must be a good Bengali gent. They are all the same. The family is very important to them and they will sacrifice almost everything (except of course their next meal) for the family. Now look, being the kind of person you are, you are hardly going to stay at that ancestral house so let him sell it and buy his sister a flat. You can remain poor and continue to struggle. Serves you well for marrying the loser in the first place. On a serious note, from your letter I can imagine you are destined for a miserable, poor life so just sit back and enjoy it and stop worrying about silly things like money and so on.
