Soccer for a cause

The Calcutta Police, on Wednesday, announced a football project that will take the sport to the doorsteps of the people to reduce the crime rate in the city by engaging the youngsters in the game.

Kolkata Goalz, which takes a cue from ‘Kickz’ in England, is a combined initiative by the British Council and local clubs, including Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, with the government providing infrastructure and logistical support.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will launch the project at the Shibtala Park in Topsia on July 6, sports minister Madan Mitra said.

Rubel Ahmed and Michael Nyarko, who conduct Kickz, will train the 10 coaches entrusted to coach the youngsters.

Boxing meet

West End Club of Howrah emerged as champions while West Bengal Police were runners-up in the state senior and sub-junior boxing championships held at the Howrah Maidan.

Felicitation

The West Bengal Hockey Lovers Association felicitated former players of Bengal at the Town Hall, on Wednesday. Olympians Gurbux Singh, Keshav Dutt and Leslie Claudius were not present.
