Presi protest against hike

Students at Presidency University demonstrated and started a relay hunger strike on campus on Monday to protest a proposed hike in fees.

About 15 supporters of the Independents’ Consolidation (IC) are taking part in the hunger strike.

“The authorities have decided to charge a development fee of Rs 2,500 at the time of admission. Besides, the arts students will have to shell out Rs 500 as library charge and the science students Rs 2,000 as library and laboratory fee. These charges were not there last year,” said Joy Saha, a supporter of IC.

“Science students have to pay nearly Rs 5,500 at the time of admission, which will include the development, lab and library fees and tuition fees of six months. This is too much of a burden on poor students,” he said.

Earlier, about 40 students had squatted inside the office of the registrar, Pradip Kumar Sengupta. They sought an assurance from Sengupta that the fees would not be raised.

“He did not assure us that the fee hike will be stalled. He said he had a talk with the vice-chancellor, who has agreed to meet us on Wednesday. We will continue our relay hunger strike till then,” said Bibaswan Basu, an IC supporter.

Sengupta declined to comment on the proposed hike. “The discussions in the university council has not been confirmed yet,” he said.

The college will open after summer vacation on Wednesday. Classes for the new batch will start on July 11.
