The state government on Wednesday gave Bidhannagar Municipality the charge of maintaining Salt Lake stadium. “We will depute 40 men to clean the compound regularly and also provide the equipment for maintenance and beautification,” said Debasish Jana, the chairman-in-council in charge of conservancy of the civic body. “The state will pay the civic body Rs 2 crore annually for the stadium’s maintenance,” said sports minister Madan Mitra.

Arms found: Police on Wednesday recovered 40 rounds of cartridges and a blank magazine of a self-loading rifle from the tank in Barrackpore where constable Pijush Kanti Ghosh had hidden his SLR after the triple murder. he constable had killed a homemaker, her husband and her sister-in-law over his alleged affair with the homemaker. Pijush told cops during interrogation that he had thrown the unused magazine and the cartridges into the tank.

Kids injured: Four school children were injured when a balcony of a building under construction in Howrah collapsed on them around 10am on Wednesday. Police said Saban Hari, 9, Tusar Hela, 8, Sagir Hari, 7, and Simran Hari, 4, were on their way to school along Narasingha Dutta Road when the incident occurred. They were admitted to Howrah District Hospital.

Plastic-free zone: State agriculture marketing minister Arup Roy on Wednesday said he would request the environment department to declare Howrah city a plastic-free zone. Roy said rampant use of plastic had caused the recent waterlogging in Howrah.

Extra coach: Eastern Railway will add an AC 3-tier coach to the Howrah-New Delhi Express from July 1 to cope with extra passenger rush.

Fraud arrest: Kasba resident Anish Mukherjee was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly duping a city doctor of Rs 11 lakh after promising to get his son admitted to a medical college in south India.

Emergency landing: A JetLite flight from Mumbai made an emergency landing at the city airport on Wednesday afternoon after the aircraft’s right engine malfunctioned, airport officials said. The flight, carrying 150 passengers, made a safe landing around 2pm.
