Meet to discuss poor results
- Principals harp on one-evaluation exam, role of parents

Dhanbad, June 15: Worried over the district’s poor performance in Jharkhand Academic Council-conducted intermediate exam this year, principals of three colleges today met to review what went wrong.

The meeting was held at PK Roy Memorial College.

Principal of RSP College, Jharia, Kiran Singh and principal of SSLNT Women’s College Vidyawati Kushwaha were present at the meeting, which was chaired by S.K. Sharma, principal of the host college.

The district, which secured second position in the state in 2009, slipped to the 13th slot in 2010 and 15th in 2011.

This year, only 17.5 per cent of the district’s science students cleared the exam while only 20 per cent commerce students and 30 per cent students of humanities passed the test.

“There are various reasons for the poor show, including factors lack of seriousness on the part of students and their parents, shortage of teachers, poor infrastructure as well as JAC’s faulty examination pattern,” said Sharma.

The principal suggested that instead of holding exams at the end of Classes XI and XII, there should be one test at the end of Class XII.

“We will write to the JAC authorities and ask them to conduct an evaluation test before the final exam to test the competence of the students,” he said.

The principal added that parents should regularly monitor their children’s performance and take corrective steps to prevent failure.
