Dad held for baby murder
Raiganj, June 10: One person was arrested today for allegedly killing his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter on Wednesday night.
Sahed Ali, 57, was allegedly suffering from depression. He had chased his wife Ituna Khatoon out of their house at Tintia in Hemtabad on Wednesday night after a fight. Ituna, who spent the night in a neighbour’s place, went back home the next morning to find the door bolted from inside. Even after repeated knocks, no one opened the door. Later, the neighbours broke open the door to find the baby lying in a pool of blood. A bloodstained chopper was also found beside the girl. Ituna informed the police. Sahed was arrested from a forest near his house this morning.
Islampur: Chopra block president of the Trinamul Congress Dabiur Rahman was assaulted by a group of youths, alleged to be supporters of Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahman, on Friday. Police said Rahman was on his way to Chopra after attending a meeting when he was attacked at the Teenmile area. He was taken to a block primary health centre and released after first aid. No one has been arrested yet.
Islampur/Balurghat: Two minors have committed suicide in Islampur and Balurghat in the past 24 hours. Shiva Sarkar, a 12-year-old boy hanged himself at his house in Gannabari in Islampur on Thursday night. Police said Shiva was a Class-VII student of Millanpally High School and took the step after he was scolded by his father. In another incident, Indrajit Mondal, 14, hanged himself from the ceiling of a shop on Friday. Indrajit used to serve at a sweet shop at Mongalpur in Balurghat.
Jalpaiguri: Two persons were injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a car on NH31D near Paharpur More on Friday. The duo, both residents of Mainaguri, were on their way to Jalpaiguri when the two-wheeler hit the car. Both were taken to the district hospital from where they were shifted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. The car has been seized and the driver arrested.
