12 kids dead

Islamabad, June 10 (PTI): At least 12 children were killed when their van plunged into a canal near Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir today, police said.

The accident occurred at 6.30am near the Jhelum canal after the driver lost control of the vehicle carrying 17 children. Three children were rescued, but one of them died later in hospital, the police said, adding that 12 bodies have been recovered.

Frog ‘eater’

Panaji (PTI): Goa forest department officials raided the house of a youth after he confessed on Facebook to killing Indian bullfrogs, a protected species, and eating them. An NGO had complained to the forest department about the poaching and the posts on the website.

Canada visa

Toronto (PTI): Toronto has announced a new visa regime that will allow Indians 10-year, multiple-entry visas to the country, giving a fillip to India-Canada trade relations. The announcement was made by Canadian minister of international trade Edward Fast.

Sex ratio

Chandigarh (PTI): The Haryana government has decided to set up a task force in each district to promote gender equality. New strategies will be chalked out to involve the public in curbing female foeticide, an official spokesperson said. The move comes after the recent census revealed adverse sex ratio in the state.

Child labour

Chandigarh (PTI): The Punjab government has intensified its campaign against child labour in the state, labour minister Arunesh Shakir said. District labour officials have been asked to conduct surprise raids to check the menace.

Lanka ferry

Chennai (PTI): Passenger ferry services between India and Sri Lanka will be flagged off on June 13 by Union shipping minister G.K. Vasan at Tuticorin. A ship Scotia Prince will be operated twice a week to Colombo by Flemingo Liners, a company statement said on Friday.
