Actor better

Actor Rudranil Ghosh’s condition has improved but he is not yet fit enough to be shifted out of ITU, doctors said on Thursday. “The swelling in the frontal lobe of his brain is responding to medicines and shrinking,” said Suman Ghosh, the superintendent of AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria, where the actor is being treated since Monday night. A speeding car had hit Rudranil after he stepped out of a restaurant.

Nazrul kin: Khilkhil Kazi, a granddaughter of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, met the chief minister at Writers’ Buildings on Thursday and told her that a Kestopur plot the United Front government had donated to the family was occupied by encroachers. The family wants the government to remove the squatters so it could set up a cultural centre named after the poet.

Convicted: Two men were convicted on Thursday in connection with two murders. Bapi Bera, who worked in a fast food centre on AJC Bose Road, was awarded life imprisonment for killing a colleague. In the other case, Dhaneswar Das was given life in jail for killing his brother.

Trio held: Prabir Mukherjee, Rabi Misra and Anand Sau were arrested on Thursday after a Sinthee-based jeweller complained they had fled with ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh from his workshop on May 6.

Blockade: Traffic was disrupted after residents blocked Beleghata Main Road for two hours on Thursday evening to protest frequent power cuts in the area.
