Poachers kill rhino in Sonitpur

Guwahati: A stray rhino from Kaziranga National Park was killed by poachers at Gopal Jarani in Sonitpur district on Sunday. “Only a few bones were found in the area,” said a forest official. Gopal Jarani is near a river and is 8km from the sixth addition of Kaziranga National Park. A large number of hand-made guns had been recovered from the area last year. These guns are used by the people of the area to kill rhinos, the official said.

Protest

Jorhat: Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad activists here on Sunday burnt the effigy of Union petroleum minister V. Ravi protesting against the fuel price hike.

Three killed

Morigaon (PTI): Three members of a family were killed by their neighbour following a land dispute in Morigaon district on Sunday, police said. Nitai Mondal attacked his neighbour Digvijay Biswas and his sons Gopi and Bishnu with sharp weapons and set their house ablaze in Bamunzari village under Mayong police station. Mondal has been arrested.

Jorhat:The Assam Swimming Association has entrusted the responsibility of organising the inter-district swimming competition this year to the Jorhat Swimming Society at the new swimming pool of the society here on June 4 and June 5.

Leader quits

Dhubri: Dharanidhar Das, general secretary of Asom Yuva Parishad, a, AGP youth wing, resigned on Sunday after the party lost seven out of eight Assembly seats in Barpeta.
