Art, time and life
Since the 18th century, Calcutta has provided patronage to European artists, as well as professionals from all over the country and skilled amateurs. There was a prolific output of oil portraits and romantic scenes, watercolours and engravings even then. Three hundred years hence, artists in the city continue to reflect this multifaceted heritage in their work. Four Quartets, the ongoing exhibition, bears testimony to this creative diversity. Chandan Bhandari, a sculptor devoted to his medium, works with mixed-media to shape and carve his imagery of the mysteries and ecstasies of life. Manisha Saha (a painting by her appears here) usually selects extraordinary snaphots of her hometown, Calcutta, and some panoramic visions of faraway landscapes, representing them in bold, colourful and kaleidoscopic style. Virtually a non-formal expressionist, Subhashis Saha prefers to play with broken forms, though his spontaneous brush often appears subjective. Tanmoy Mridha visualises, so to speak, some of his auto-emotive discourses in mixed-media. lEvent: An exhibition of paintings and sculpture by a group of four artists lWhen: Till May 18; 3pm - 8pm lWhere: Academy of Fine Arts, Central Gallery
