From seminars to drug research
Capital Engineering College located at Mahatapalla, Khurda, celebrated its first annual day with a cultural extravaganza on the college premises on May 3.
Principal Ananta Kumar Sahoo inaugurated the function and emphasised on striking a balance between academics and extra curricular activities for all round development of students.
Chief guest for the evening, Subash Chandra Mishra, vice-chancellor of SoA (Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan) University, Bhubaneswar, advised the students to become good technocrats as per needs of the present era.
B.B. Mishra, chief speaker and MBA professor at the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, and Subha Narayan Sahoo, guest of honour and founder of the college, also addressed the students on the occasion.
The show ended with students performing a variety of activities ranging from folk dance and music to modern dance and drama.
Role of women

A UGC-sponsored seminar, “Role and status of women in the age of globalization” was held at the Pattamundai College in Kendrapara district, which highlighted the need for greater empowerment of women in an era of globalisation.
“Over 200 college teachers from non-government colleges across the state participated in the seminar while 28 research papers on the topic were presented on the occasion,” said Kailash Chandra Patra, principal, Pattamundai College.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumarbar Das, the new vice-chancellor of Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, said: “Nowadays women are enjoying freedom more than they did two decades ago. But it is mostly confined in urban areas. Women living in the countryside continue to be neglected. Male chauvinism is hindering women’s progress.
“Unless there is a change in mindset, status of women would remain low. The country’s economic prosperity in an age of globalisation would be a misnomer if the women are not given their proper due.”
Among others, Jayakrushna Baral, former vice-chancellor, Berhampur University, Bishun Charan Choudhury, professor, political science post-graduate department, Utkal University, spoke on the occasion.
The other speakers also talked about how women have a pivotal role to play at a time when the world has turned into a minuscule unit with science’s rapid strides.
Gender bias rules the roost even as socio-economic life continues to be male-centric.
Award for scientist
Eminent scientist, Pradipta Kishore Dash, who spearheads research activities at the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar, has been chosen for the prestigious Biju Patnaik Award for scientific excellence for the year 2010.
The award, that includes a cas prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation, has been instituted by the Orissa Bigyan Academy of the state government.
Dash, now director (research and consultancy) at SoA University’s multidisciplinary research cell, had earlier received the state-instituted Samanta Chandrasekhar Award in engineering in 1990 in recognition of his contribution to scientific research.
He had also been awarded a DSc. (Doctorate of science) degree in Applied Artificial Intelligence from the Utkal University in 2003.
His areas of research included power engineering, automation and intelligent systems, applied computer sciences and data mining and signal processing.
The Asian School of Business Management (ASBM) Group of Institutions added another feather to its cap by entering into an agreement with an internationally acclaimed centre of learning and excellence. Last week, a MoU was signed between the California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), and ASBM Trust that includes ASBM, Bhubaneswar and Hyderabad and ASBM Institute of BBA.
By virtue of this MoU, students of the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) of ASBM would get an opportunity to attend the International Students’ Internship Programme at California State University.
This internship programme will be held over a span of eight weeks for students of PGDM and five weeks for BBA students. It will cover course work, extensive industry visit and related study tour. Certification of this programme would be made through the Global Management Centre of California State University, San Bernardino, USA. As per the terms of this agreement, the BBA students of ASBM will be entitled to pursue their PG programme at California State University, USA, and there will be exclusive provisions for acknowledging the credit weightage of ASBM-BBA students in USA.
This agreement for promoting academic cooperation and enriching educational, cultural and technological ties was signed during the visit of president of California State University, Albert Karnig, to India.
It will be implemented from the current academic session.
Through this MoU both institutions will try to develop collaboration between their colleges, through such means as exchanges, lectures, conferences, workshops, collaborative research, joint projects with business and industry, and professional development programmes.
A fortnight-long staff development programme on the subject “Derivatisation of Nano Material for Drug Delivery and Bio-medical Applications”, funded by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), will be held at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) in Bhubaneswar from July 12.
According to Sudam Chandra Si, dean of SPS run by the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, the subject chosen for the programme had immense importance since the nano-material was a powerful tool to overcome shortcomings in the drug delivery system.
“Keeping in view the prohibitive cost of development of new chemical entity and drugs going off patent, it was imperative to develop newer systems of drug delivery,” he said.
Functionalisation of carbon nano-tubes could provide limitless opportunities for bio-medical applications and required extensive research, Si said.
