Two arrested at airport

Customs officers arrested two men for illegally carrying precious stones worth around Rs 90 lakh at the city airport on Tuesday. eer Khalil Abbas, 45, was arrested in the afternoon and Salil Zaheer, 47, was arrested at night. Both had arrived from Bangkok and were on their way to catch flights to Bangalore, where they stay. Investigating officers suspect the duo were part of a smuggling racket. he officers said the two had not paid the import duty on the precious stones.

Power cut alert

Power supply may be disrupted on Alipore Road, Chetla Road and in adjacent areas around 9am on Thursday because of maintenance by CESC.

Road mishap

A man in his 60s was injured after he slipped and fell off a CSTC bus on St Georges Gate Road, near Jubilee Lines in the Hastings area, around 3.15pm on Wednesday. The driver and the conductor of the bus took the man to SSKM Hospital.

Burns

A 22-year-old woman, Naima Nazima, sustained burns after her dress caught fire while she was cooking in her Jorasanko home on Wednesday morning. Nazima was admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

Metro death

A contract labourer died after being electrocuted inside the Noapara Metro Railway car shed on Wednesday afternoon. Mintu Das, 30, a Sonarpur resident, was working in the car shed when the mishap occurred. Police sources said there was no foul play.

Man missing

A 58-year-old man, Bishnu Chakraborty, has been missing from Salt Lake since Monday. Police said Chakraborty used to work at AD 70 in Salt Lake as a domestic help and had reported for work on Monday. He left by afternoon but did not return to his Sodepur home. hakraborty’s daughter is to get married on Thursday and he had promised to finish shopping for the wedding by Monday, said police. His daughter Supriya lodged a missing diary with Bidhannagar North police station on Tuesday night. According to Chakraborty’s employers, he had left with his salary and had taken a week’s leave. His phone has been switched off since then.

Fatal fall

A mason died after falling from the fourth floor of a building under construction near airport gate No. 2½ in Dum Dum on Wednesday morning. The mason, identified as Haradhan Sardar, 20, was a Behrampore resident and had been working in the building in Motilal colony for the past few months. He was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead.

Cars recovered

Officers of Calcutta police recovered two stolen cars from Balarampur in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday night. Police said three men — Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Zafar Iqbal and Mohammad Arshad — had stolen the cars in the city earlier this year and had sold them to two UP residents. A city police team arrested the trio last week.

Youths held

Passengers on a bus going to Kakdwip from Esplanade beat up four youths, suspecting them to be robbers, and handed over two of them to officers of Thakurpukur police station on Wednesday night. olice said the youths had boarded the bus in Behala and had been heckling passengers. Some passengers overpowered them and started beating them up. wo of the youths managed to flee. A knife was found in the possession of the two youths who were arrested.
