Hunger strike

May 3: Members of Sodou Asom Shramik Krishak Kalyan Parishad on Tuesday held a 24-hour hunger strike at Dispur Last Gate, demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. They also welcomed Anna Hazare, who will visit the city on May 20.

Suicide

A 26-year-old man, identified as Bhupen Das, hailing from Baksa district, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his room at Hanuman Towers in Athgaon on Tuesday morning. He was the caretaker of the building.

Owl rescued

Activists of the People for Animals (PFA) on Tuesday rescued an endangered barn fish owl from a market area at Ulubari. The chairperson of the Assam chapter of PFA, Sangeeta Goswami, said the barn fish owl, found abundantly in Assam in the past, has become endangered now because of fast loss of habitat.

Seminar

A seminar on the Ongoing Movement Against Corruption: Role of Working Class will be organised at the Institute of Engineers at Panbazar on May 6. The Assam Provincial Bank Employees’ Association will organise the seminar.

Programme

A three-day programme for minor victims of militancy and ethnic clashes will be organised by Assam police from May 7 to May 9. Children will be provided with financial assistance for their educational rehabilitation by the National Foundation for Communal Harmony, New Delhi.

Money snatched

Dibrugarh, May 3: A sum of Rs 5 lakh was snatched from S. Das, a customer of a private bank in Thana Charali in Dibrugarh town today. Das had just withdrawn the money from the bank when two persons snatched the money from him.

Court case

Kokrajhar: Lalit Hajong, 28, an NDFB cadre of the Ranjan Daimary faction, who was arrested on April 7 from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup rural district, was produced in Kokrajhar district court on Tuesday.

Flooded

Jorhat: Many localities of Jorhat town were flooded on Tuesday following heavy showers since Monday night.

Arrested

Dhubri: Kalimuddin alias Mayan Ali, 22, of Dhubri was arrested on Monday night by RPF of Jogighopa for his alleged involvement in train robberies.

AIUDF wins

Dhubri: A recounting was conducted at the instance of Gauhati High Court on Monday, where an AIUDF candidate for ZPC member from Kalapani in Dhubri district, Nekibul Hussain Khan, won by 34 votes.
