Jail for husband assault

Islampur, April 27: A woman was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days today for allegedly trying to murder her husband.

Court sources said, Shanta Sarkar Das, a postmaster at the district court here, had tried to hit her husband Swatik, a dentist, with an air-pump used to inflate bicycle tyres. Swatik had filed a complaint with Islampur police on April 8 alleging that Shanta had tried to murder him by hitting him on the head. Swatik somehow escaped but ended up with a fractured right hand.


Trio mauled

Jalpaiguri: Three residents of Tentultala village in Ramsai of Mainaguri on the fringes of Gorumara National Park were mauled by two leopards on Wednesday. The trio are under treatment at Jalpaiguri district hospital. The animals are yet to be traced.


Body found

Jaigaon: The body of Krishna Rai, a 47-year-old resident of a village near the Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary, was recovered from the sanctuary on Wednesday. Omprakash, the divisional forest officer of wildlife-III said he had entered the reserve forest with cattle on Tuesday and had not returned since then. On Wednesday morning, a patrol team spotted his body. Krishna died when a rhino attacked him but his family would not receive any compensation because he had entered a reserve forest area, the DFO said.


Road death

Jalpaiguri: Jharna Khatoon, 14, a resident of Chaulhati near here and a Class IX student of Bholapur High School in Rajganj, died on Wednesday when the jeep she was travelling in fell on its side on NH31D. Jahanara Begum, a Class VI student accompanying her, also suffered injuries and is under treatment at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. The driver has been arrested and the vehicle seized.


Kid poisoned

Jalpaiguri: The four-year-old son of a farmer at Charcharabari in Dhupguri block died on Tuesday after he mistook a bottle of pesticide as milk and consumed it. Bijoy, his six-year-old brother, who had also consumed it, is under treatment at the Jalpaiguri district hospital.
