THE MANE MAN
A strange shade of dark-orange and long, straw-like locks. Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf told Dhoni in 2006: “If you take my advice, you look good in this hairstyle.” A cool and clean, short and slightly spiky look. Quite conservative compared with his previous haircut but matched his growing appeal as national icon. Closely cropped, with a hint of salt-and-pepper. Musharraf hasn’t approved yet, but Mandy has. “That’s a great new look. MSD pulling it off fabulously,” tweets Mandira Bedi.

I think every look was very necessary in Mahi’s life to define that moment and where he was in life. When I first met him, he was a boy with orange hair. The first thing we did was to colour it black. That was a time he had taken everyone by storm. It’s not a very urban look. We have to go places with your hair, I had told him. First, all the young girls will love you. You will appeal to kids and to the masses.

With this look, I told him: Now we have to get the housewives. It was a sophisticated look and made him look like a handsome stud. The point was to make him more acceptable among the urban crowd.

It first started with a little tail at his nape that got very popular. The cut gave him credibility. This

look was very understated, classy and cool. A lot of people would say that with his hair, his power is gone [a reference to the Samson legend]! He’s not superstitious like that.”

He used a buzzer (or trimmer) to crop his hair short. It’s the only look he can do himself, it’s the easiest. The primary reason why he probably opted for the cut was because he needed to start from scratch, to release all the tension. He did the same thing before the wedding (with Sakshi, in July 2010). Also, with the IPL coming up, he probably needed a low-maintenance cut

I remember seeing him one evening at Shisha when he had just started out and I thought his haircut was terrible. Nothing was right: the colour, the length or the texture. Someone pointed him out to me as a young Turk with a great future, but the haircut that day failed to impress.

That was his best look. He’s such a smart guy, a very good-looking boy and the short hair reallycomplemented his personality. He dresses well and that haircut really looked good on him.

I really don’t know what he looks like with that short crop, but I am sure that it will look good on him because he has sharp features. I would really like to see him in a military-style crop.
