Imphal, March 24: The parents of Irom Roger Singh today demanded befitting punishment for their son’s killer — N. Ajay Meitei, son of Manipur’s flood control and irrigation minister N. Biren Singh.
They also demanded Biren Singh’s resignation.
Ajay allegedly shot Roger, 21, with his licensed gun on the Imphal Airport Road at Ghari village in Imphal West on March 20, after an altercation that began when his vehicle was denied right of way by Roger’s car.
Roger was hit in the neck and he died of his injuries on way to an Imphal hospital. Police arrested Ajay and four of his friends along with one M-20 pistol the same day.
Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who is also the home minister, said in the state Assembly on March 21 that Ajay had confessed to firing the shot that killed Roger.
Ibobi Singh promised the members of the house that the guilty would be punished in accordance with the law.
“I want my son’s killers punished. They killed my son,” Irom Chitra Devi, mother of Roger, said.
Reacting to rumours that the victim’s family received money from Biren Singh, the father of the victim, Irom Lokendro Singh, said he would not trade the life of his son for money. “I did not take any money. I will not take any money. I want the minister’s son and others involved in the crime punished.”
Biren Singh holds the portfolio of food and civil supplies and youth affairs and sport.
Urging the government to speed up investigation and bring the case to its logical conclusion, the parents said if the minister’s son were allowed to go free, relatives of VIPs would commit more such crimes in future.
