Barfi this monsoon

It didn’t happen in 2010. But in all likelihood, Ranbir Kapoor will keep his date with Calcutta in 2011. Bollywood’s current heartthrob is slated to come down in July to shoot for Anurag Basu’s Barfi.

When Anurag was making his acting debut last year in Onir’s I Am in Calcutta, he had shared with us his plans of shooting a big chunk of his next film (after Kites) here and in north Bengal with Ranbir. At that time, the film was tentatively called Silence and had Katrina Kaif opposite Ranbir.

Now, the film’s called Barfi and it’s got Priyanka Chopra opposite Ranbir with south superstar Ileana playing a very important role.

Anurag couldn’t start his film last year because Ranbir chose to work on Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar first. He has been shooting for the A.R. Rahman musical for the last many months.

“Now that he is done with Rockstar, I can start Barfi,” Anurag told t2. The director was in town earlier this week to finalise the locations for the Calcutta leg of the shooting.

“I am starting the Mumbai schedule from Sunday (March 20),” revealed Anurag. “I will come back in July for the shoot here. I am a little worried about the monsoon in Calcutta. Hope I can shoot in the rains.”

Anurag doesn’t want to divulge much about Barfi at this stage. What is known is that both Ranbir and Priyanka play deaf-mute characters. The two stars, who had earlier worked together in Anjaana Anjaani, have been doing workshops and learning sign language for the film.

But before that, we will see Anurag in front of the camera as a Bengali doctor in I Am, which releases on April 22. “Oh, I just shot for that one day, but it’s a film with a noble cause and so I am happy to talk about it and promote it,” said the Life in a... Metro maker.
