Glare on police inaction

March 14: Around 50 Trinamul Congress and SUCI leaders with non-bailable warrants against them attended a public meeting today, unchallenged by police who are supposed to arrest such fugitives as part a poll drill.

The leaders attended a meeting to commemorate four years of the police firing in Nandigram that claimed 14 lives on March 14, 2007.

The Election Commission has asked the government to arrest all those who have non-bailable warrants against them.

Police officers, however, feigned ignorance, though officer-in-charge Ashok Mishra was present at the venue.

The CBI last night arrested four persons with alleged CPM links over the Netai firing on January 7 that claimed nine lives. These were the CBI’s first arrests since it took over the probe from the CID.
