Driver guilty
Malda, Feb. 28: The additional sessions judge here found Akhtar Ali guilty of murdering Intuc district president and vice-chairman of Englishbazar municipality Biswanath Guha.
Guha had been murdered in Durgabari on June 12, 2008. Akhtar was the driver of Guhas car and had been arrested on the night of the incident. The judge, however, acquitted Ganesh Banerjee and Shyamal Majumdar, both close to the leader, who were arrested later. The sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.
Court verdict
Siliguri: Amit Maheshwari of Khalpara was pronounced guilty of murdering Supriya Mitruka, 20, by R. N. Samanta, the additional district and sessions judge of the second court of Siliguri on Monday. Supriya was found dead near a building on Hill Cart Road on January 30, 2006. Amit, who allegedly had an affair with her, had been arrested after the incident. The verdict will be announced on Tuesday.
Road mishap
Malda: Anuj Ghosh, 30, a taxi driver, was killed when a truck hit him on NH34 at Rathbari More on Sunday night. Police said Ghosh, a resident of Maheshpur, was crossing the highway when the vehicle knocked him down.
Student hurt
Malda: Mukti Khatun, a Madhyamik examinee from Harishchandrapur, was injured when the motor-driven rickshaw van she was travelling in was hit by a truck on state highway 81 on Monday. Police said Mukti, along with 13 others, was on her way to the exam centre when the accident happened. The injured were taken to a hospital at Chanchol.
