BRIEFS

Fish unit raided

Malda, Feb. 27: A gang of eight to 10 persons raided Sagardighi fish breeding centre at Sahdullahpur last night and beat up the guard who was on duty.

Assistant manager of the centre Mukul Ghosh said there was only one constable at the camp inside the unit, 12km from here, instead of four policemen who were supposed to be there. He added that the constable was also not present at the centre during the incident. When the gang members found nothing worth robbing, they tied up the night guard and fled. This morning Englishbazar police recovered eight bombs and material for making explosives from the spot.

Bridge protest

Alipurduar: Trinamul Congress supporters on Sunday stopped the car of public works minister Kshiti Goswami and waved black flags at him while he was on his way to inaugurate a bridge over the Nonai. The president of the town block committee of Trinamul, Mihir Dutta, said Goswami had laid the foundation for Nonai and Cheko bridges on the same day in 2008. He had said the bridges would be inaugurated on the same day. Although work on Nonai is complete, work on the second bridge is still not over.
