Congratulations on being chosen for Lakme Fashion Week’s Grand Finale. You are one of the youngest designers to have bagged this slot…

Thank you, it is very exciting. When we were asked to be part of the finale, we were really happy. Yes, you are right; I think it is still quite early in our career for us to be closing a fashion week, so it is doubly special.

What is the collection looking like?

The theme is Fantasy, something we totally identify with. We have always been inspired by fantasy, Hollywood and old-world glamour. So for us the concept was a perfect fit. The collection is young and fun and very glamorous. There is a whole lot of colour and the cosmetics collection looks fabulous too. There is a range of hues like blues, pinks and reds, all very romantic and feminine. We really enjoyed working on this collection and it has been a very inspiring journey.

Looking back, do you think Gauri & Nainika the brand was born ahead of its time? That you prepared the nation before the ‘dress explosion’?

Well, when we started, people were definitely not wearing such a variety of dresses. It was more about jeans and trousers. So when we began showing dresses, some people were like “who’s going to wear these corset dresses, long gowns…” Even the international brands hadn’t come in with their gamut of dresses. We are happy that you think we did the groundwork before the dress explosion. Many other people have said that too, that we have been instrumental in the change. Nowadays so many designers are making dresses and gowns.

What’s your fail-proof recipe for a perfect red carpet look?

The first is a great dress, something dramatic and voluminous. The colour really is a personal choice but we suggest you stay away from black or white. On the red carpet, very high heels are a must but you have to be careful so that they don’t show. A clutch is necessary. An understated bracelet would be nice and a pair of earrings would complete the look. These should be Western-looking and classy, and not too heavy. The hair should be styled up. The mouth should ideally be red, like a beautifully done red, with strong eyeliner and nothing else.
