DID YOU KNOW

That apple maggot flies are born in the apple? Each female fly chooses a sweet smelling apple that is ripening. She stabs a small hole into it using the small, sharp, hollow tube on her underside. She then releases her eggs into the fruit through the tube. Subsequently, the eggs hatch into white worms. When the ripe apple falls to the ground, the worms crawl out and burrow into the ground. There, a hard outer skin develops on each worm, giving it a winter home. Inside this home the worm turns into a fly.
