Laxer clinches individual honours

Jamshedpur, Feb. 15: Laxer stole the thunder in the individual tent-pegging event at the National Games, helping Haryana clinch gold at Gopal Maidan today.

Assistant sub-inspector Ram Bhagat rode Laxer to the top slot, pegging the tents with elan in front of an impressive afternoon crowd. Bhagat tallied 31.5 points, tripping Bihar’s Manoj Kumar Singh.

Bhagat patted steed Laxer after bagging the gold. “I’ve been riding Laxer for years. He is one of the best tent-pegging horses around,” he said.

Singh, who tried his best by relying on Soni, managed the second position with 28 points in his kitty while Santosh Tripathy of Madhya Pradesh walked home with the bronze with 25 points against his name.

Honours were also reserved for Gauri, the horse belonging to Madhya Pradesh. She and her rider Jaswinder won the highly commendable honour with Gauri receiving a white rossette.

The medals were handed over by Col A.K. Sharma, commandant of the 64th battalion of the army located in the city.

Like yesterday, a good number of people trouped to the venue to watch the action unfold. Several had come to watch the practice session after the opening rounds in the morning while most found way late in the afternoon when the actual battle went into display.
