Students allege torture, flee school
Bhubaneswar: At least 41 students fled a residential school in Rayagadas' Dangrasoroda area alleging torture by the school's headmaster. The students have left behind hand written posters against the headmaster Bijay Nayak.
Nayak, however, rubbished the allegations and said that it was a conspiracy against him by his rivals. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident by the school and mass education department secretary Aparajita Sarangi.
Water woes
Bhubaneswar: Local residents of the Modipara area in Sambalpur on Thursday held protests demanding decontamination of drinking water of the area. The water treatment plat in the area had developed a crack, allowing dirty sewerage water to seep in, they alleged. The plant officials said that the public health department has been informed about the issue and remedial measures will be taken.
New train
Bhubaneswar: The ministry of railways has decided to introduce a new weekly super fast train between Puri and Valsad via Sambalpur, Bilaspur, Bhopal and Surat. On the inaugural day, the train will leave Valsad for Puri at 3.00pm on February 12. The train will have stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal, Talcher Road, Angul, Sambalpur City, Jharsuguda, Champa, Bilaspur, Anuppur, Shahdol, Katni, Jabalpur, Itarsi, Bhopal, Maksi, Ujjain, Ratlam, Dahod, Vadodara and Surat.
Boat capsized
Paradip: A deep-sea fishing vessel with seven crews on board capsized mid-sea this late afternoon, about 10 nautical miles off the Paradip coast. Local trawl union members said that the vessel, Maa Thanapati, developed technical snag and failed to tide over the sea waves, resulting in its capsizal. The crews, however, were rescued by another trawl fishing in mid-sea, added sources.
Rare honour
Bhubaneswar: Eminent singer Pranab Pattnaik will be conferred the Prafulla Kar Samman for 2011 here on February 16. Pattanaik will be conferred the honour during the 72nd birth anniversary celebration of versatile singer-composer Prafulla Kar. The award has been instituted by the Prafulla Kar Foundation to honour pioneers in the field of music every year during the birthday celebrations of Kar.
Rename stir
Bhubaneswar: The Kosal Kranti Dal on Thursday held demonstrations demanding that the Balangir Utsav be renamed as Kosal Utsav. “Though the local administration officials had assured us last year that they will rename the festival, they refused to do so at the last moment this year,” said the protesters. They also demanded recognition of Kosal as a language.
