Air India discount

Air India on Thursday announced a 50 per cent discount on the basic economy class fares for all its domestic flights for passengers below the age of 30 and above 63 to enjoy World Cup cricket. The offer will be valid from February 15 to April 5. Those buying tickets under this scheme will have to pay other charges, such as for fuel and passenger services.

Theft

Gold ornaments worth around Rs 2 lakh were stolen from the house of Ram Chandra Singh, general manager (operations), Kothari hospital, in Alipore on Thursday evening. Police sources said Singh’s wife had gone out of their flat, on the 10th floor of the hospital, at 4.30pm. She returned an hour later and found the main door ajar. The ornaments were missing.

Missing

Montu Das, 35, a resident of New Town and a building material supplier, has been missing since leaving home on Wednesday. He told family members before leaving that he would go to Salt Lake. The family lodged a complaint after his motorbike was found near Paribesh Bhavan in Salt Lake. They alleged that Das had recently received threat calls and had disputes with a few building material suppliers in his area.

Water bill

The civic water supply department will send notices to 92 state and central government offices from Friday, demanding immediate payment of dues on water supply. The establishments owe the civic body Rs 14 crore. The offices under the scanner include the police headquarters and government hospitals.

Duo in net

Raju Singh, 25, and his father Laxman Singh, 60, residents of Abani Dutta Road under Golabari police station in Howrah, were arrested on Thursday for allegedly abetting the suicide of Raju’s wife Pinki.

Police said Pinki, 22, had set herself on fire on February 3, unable to bear the torture by her in-laws. She was admitted to Howrah District Hospital with 70 per cent burns and died on Wednesday night.

Five arrested

Police arrested five men from in front of Ruby General Hospital where they had allegedly gathered to carry out a robbery early on Thursday. On interrogation, they admitted they were part of a car theft racket, said police.

Man held

Police arrested Manzur Alam, 24, who has several criminal cases pending against him. One single-shot gun and a live cartridge were recovered from his possession. Police sources said Alam, a resident of 41/1 Tiljala Road, had been involved in a robbery in Topsia in 2007 and was also wanted in connection with rioting on Amherst Street.
